Tip of the Hat: Connor Ferster, Braithwaite Wallets

March 29, 2010

This Tip of the Hat is 3rd and last in the series I have created to celebrate Birthday Month here at The Northern Edge.  The very nature of my virtual assistance business depends on getting and retaining clients, so I am lucky to have such a great group of business owners that I work with in support of their businesses.

Jumping into the Deep End (or, how I started in business)

March 24, 2010

If you’ve been following throughout March, you’ll have undoubtedly been unable to miss that I have been celebrating  my first year in business, all month long.  This post is going to be a bit of a different tone; I’m going to get more personal and give some background on why this milestone is so big for me.

Taking the step in starting my own business has been a lifelong ambition, and one that for many years felt more like a pipe dream than anything.  I loved the work that I did in the administrative field, but I felt unsatisfied within the confines of my job.  I wanted to grow more and in different ways, and because of our geographic location, options for further development and ladder climbing were pretty minimal.

My husband and I chose to live in a small rural community knowing that my career development and aspirations would be limited.  It was a decision we made based on our wants and goals for ourselves and our family. Read more

My Favorite Tweeps

March 18, 2010

As promised earlier this week, this post is all about my favorite VAs on Twitter.

First, an explanation of how I organize the people I like to follow so that I can track the conversations that interest me most.  I have two main lists that I watch in Twitter (via HootSuite): Virtual Assistants and Must Reads. (I used to have others, and will again… am going through an impromptu re-organization.)

To migrate from the regular stream to the Must Read list, the Tweep has to meet a few criteria:

  • I want to read every tweet and look for them every day
  • They actively engage with fellow Tweeps
  • Their tweets are helpful and balanced between self-promotion, interesting links and RTs
  • They are RT’d by others

Continuing with my Birthday Month series, this post is dedicated to the online resources that I have found most helpful in my first year of business.

The following list is organized in no specific order and are the resources from which I have gained invaluable information and lessons.  I continue to visit and use these resources on a regular basis. Read more

Tip of the Hat: The Wealthy Freelancer

March 9, 2010

As many of you know, I am celebrating my one year anniversary in business for The Northern Edge this month.  This milestone is a big one for me, and I’ve planned a series of announcements and special posts to mark the date.

To this point, the announcements have been all about The Northern Edge – the unveiling of my new logo and business name (formerly Edge VA), and a post outlining the target market and niche to which The Northern Edge will be focusing on for 2010 and beyond.

The announcements are obviously important and exciting – but mostly for me!  This post, and subsequent “Tip of the Hat” posts are dedicated to my clients, past and current in thanks and appreciation for partnering with me for their virtual assistant needs.

Client: The Wealthy Freelancer

Perhaps my most complicated client, and one of my most recent additions, is the team at TheWealthyFreelancer.Com.  To this point as a VA, I have primarily worked with solo business owners in support of their online business ventures.  So, when I started working with Pete Savage, Ed Gandia and Steve Slaunwhite, the co-Founders of TheWealthyFreelancer.com, I realized quickly that extra care and attention to clear communication and organization would be required (hence the complicated).

Who Are My Clients?

March 7, 2010

The Northern Edge has Declared a Niche!

One of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make in my first year of business has been to whom I should target my services.  Most VAs choose a target market and a niche to which they offer their services, so that they can tailor their marketing to their ideal clients.

March 1, 2010

March is Birthday Month!  I officially launched Edge VA on March 17, 2009, and boy, what a year it has been.

In celebration, I have some big announcements – stuff that I have been working on behind the scenes for the last several months will finally be revealed.

So, without further ado…
