Twitter, Slow & Steady (part 2)

August 7, 2009

Continuing the conversation from my previous post, I’m going to discuss some of the Twitter Tools and Applications that I like and use to make the experience better for me.

1. TweetDeck: I love this application!  Before I discovered TweetDeck, I was trying to do everything from my Twitter homepage.  I didn’t understand RTs and Replies until I started using TweetDeck.  It makes everything so much easier for me to organize and manage.

I have organized my tweeps into groups: VA Contacts, some industry specific (like nonprofit and conservation groups), Must Reads (these are tweets I don’t want lost).  Sometimes I add a column and then decide to take it away, and I’m working on better organizing my groups – but it’s working for me the way it is and I don’t mind it being a work in progress.

One of the drawbacks to this application, is that it is a downloaded to your desktop.  For those who want to work from the web, I suggest HootSuite.  By all appearances, it works much like TweetDeck, but with some cool extras, like multiple users for accounts.  I don’t use it myself, but know others who love it.

2. MrTweet:  Daily, MrTweet scans my following list and suggests new people to follow, based on that list and the suggestions made by my current tweeps.  Profile information, followers and other user stats are shown for each person in the list.  You can add these tweeps right from the application by logging in via your Twitter account.

I log in daily or every couple of days and go through the list, checking out each profile and history of tweets before adding new people.  The list is relatively short, which is great imo – I don’t need to mass follow on a daily basis.

The other great thing about this application, is that you can recommend a tweep you think deserves accolades, or get recommended yourself!

3. Twellow: Think Twitter yellow pages.  Tweeps add themselves to the relevant categories or sub-categories.  To find new tweeps to follow you can browse per category, or type in a term and search for tweeps based on that term or keyword string.

Twellow, like MrTweet shows the profile information for each person, their location, and followers.  Like MrTweet, you can add these tweeps right from the application by supplying your Twitter login information.

4. Tweepular: Now that I am gaining more followers, and (not so surprisingly) following more people, I want a tool that allows me to look more closely at my following.  While ugly to look at, Tweepular allows me to see my following/follower stats in detail, with filters to change the way I look at it depending on what I am looking to do.

This tool also allows follows/unfollows – but be careful!  A wrong click for bulk unfollow can be disastrous. (trust me, I know from an experience with a client)

So that’s it! I only use, on a regular basis, 4 tools or applications.  There are some other great tools and apps out there, and I definitely advise that you find the ones that work best for you.

I’m enjoying my experience on Twitter, and now that I have the tools that work for me, I feel organized and managed.  Just the way I like it!
